RESEARCHER PAUL AMOUROUX WILL CONDUCT 19 WORKSHOPS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF INSECTS TO CHILDREN AND NEIGHBORS OF VITACURA Hemera | Universidad Mayor

People often have a poor image of insects and are unfamiliar of the vital role of these species play in nature and human activities.

Although they represent more than 50% of all species on planet Earth and more than 75% if only animals are considered, the current biodiversity crisis threatens to drastically reduce the number and diversity of insects. The consequences of their disappearance can seriously affect natural ecosystems, due to their role in trophic chains or the decomposition of organic matter, and also human activities such as agriculture, since they are essential in nutrient cycling or crop pollination.

In order to sensitize the community about the important role of insects in our daily lives and nature, the academic Paul Amouroux of the Earth Observation Center Hémera U. Mayor, will conduct a series of workshops as part of the project "Workshops to raise awareness of the beauty and role of insects in ecosystems", tendered by the I. Municipality of Vitacura.

The activity will be aimed at children from kindergartens and neighbors of the commune to promote knowledge about insects and arthropods in general, and to encourage their respect and protection.

The initiative expects to impact about 350 children from 15 kindergartens (age range 3 to 4 years) and about 100 neighbors, who will be able to attend 4 other outdoor workshops to be held in squares of the commune between September and December 2023.
