Between July 31 and August 10, the Estival Internship II of the third and fifth year students of the Forestry Engineering program was held in the commune of Frutillar (Los Lagos Region).
The initiative was led by the director, Enrique Arce, and professors Cynthia Vanlerberghe, Leonardo Durán and Sandra Claros, with Hémera Center researchers Waldo Pérez and Paulina Vidal.
During the activity, the students acquired general training competencies for the management of communication skills, basic research skills, scientific reasoning, quantitative tools, self-learning and personal development.
In addition, they conducted a forest inventory at Fundo Santa Ana in 500 m2 plots according to the methodology of the +Bosques project, to characterize the composition and structure at the stand level (50*10 m tree plots, 10*10 m sapling plots and 1*1 m regeneration plots).
With the data obtained, they estimated biomass and carbon storage at stand level.
A technical visit was also made to the Mariquina and Los Castaños plant production nurseries in Valdivia, both belonging to the company Forestal Arauco.
The results were presented in a technical report and presented to the academic staff for the evaluation of competencies.
