Insects dominate the biodiversity of species on the planet, with more than 1 million described and an estimated 4 to 7 million to be described (Stork, 2017).
They all play an important role in food chains, in the decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling in agriculture or in crop pollination.
Despite this, the current biodiversity crisis has affected them, generating a decrease in their abundance and diversity (Hallmann et al., 2017).
The importance of insects is fundamental and through 46 workshops dedicated to children between 3 and 4 years old from kindergartens and schools of the Vitacura Commune, the entomologist Dr. Paul Amouroux and Dr. Dinka Mandakovic, will transmit their knowledge through practical activities, where children will be able to understand what are insects? what is the role of insects for humans and ecosystems, what are the Chilean insects of central and southern Chile, and finally, search and observe in the schoolyard or squares the insects present in the Vitacura Commune.
In addition, the workshops will be extended to families and neighborhood communities. Through 4 outdoor workshops, children and adults will be invited to learn about insects through card games, brainstorming on the perception of insects, presentation of the collection of insects and arthropods, and conversation about the species that can be found in the backyards of the commune's gardens with a focus on “pests” and their control through agroecological techniques.
